Deep learning has recently started to be applied to the task of image upsampling and has shown impressive enough results that nVidia has started to ship some graphics cards with built-in image upsampling processing capability. These approaches differ from simple interpolation approaches by learning a complex statistical model of "normal" images and using these models to "supersample" a new image from the model conditioned on the low-resolution image.
