I am a little bit confused about how the DMD work. Does the pixel that reflects light toward light absorber appear dark in projection and the pixel reflecting light toward projection lens appears as a bright spot in projection?

It's super impressive that folks were able to build this kind of thing as far back as 1973, with only very rudimentary computer-aided design tools.
