Reminds me of the Nyquist rate in signal processing, which equals twice the highest frequency of a function or a signal. It requires a sampling rate of the Nyquist rate or higher to prevent aliasing.

If we had some statistics about the function could we choose where to sample more intelligently? I'm thinking about a graph that is mostly flat but has some parts that are very wavy.
