Another note to add is that real cameras (Canon, Nikon, etc.) indeed have a built in low pass - anti aliasing filter. Here's a bit more explanation on that and an image which shows what happens if you actually remove the low-pass filter.

Also an interesting note that Nikon actually makes some cameras that purposefully remove the anti-aliasing filter to get sharper images for landscape photographers.

In short, it's a set of optical lenses that can split the light in front of the sensor.
