I wondering what are unique problems for AR devices. Do they share the same challenge of VR?

I worked on a small AR project before and I felt that AR poses more challenges on computer vision problems, like scene understanding. It requires the device to recognize planes, predict depth value and do all sorts of scene understanding in real-time, which could be really challenging.
