What are some other invariants that could be used to maintain cache coherence?

I was pretty lost on this at first because of some jargon that I wasn’t familiar with —
Initial questions were - What is an epoch? (in general and in this diagram - are the epochs divided by lines?) What is an invariant? (Does this mean that each epoch has to fall into both of these categories / meet these criteria? or that these are the two types of epochs?)
