What I wonder is how inferior are quad meshes to triangle meshes? Do we not lose some advantages that triangles have (e.g. being planar)?

if one was to perform subdivision on such structures, it seems that one would want the subdivision to happen non-uniformly (mostly happen the curved surface). Are there specialized algorithms for this use case?
